Warcry
*Ch. 1*
Ailalue and Llawder peeked around the sandstone wall and giggled. Skipper was trying to teach the dibbuns to swim, a near impossible feat, but important incase they fell in the abbey pond.
Llawder, a stout hedgehog, nudged Ailalue and nodded towards the Abbey. Friar Jonar was bringing lunch. Ailalue rubbed her paws and grinned. "I hope there's Dandelion Fizz!"
The hungry pair ran up the battlement stairs to where Jonar was serving. Skipper, who too was coming up cried out, "Oh the beautiful Summer! Summer of the Blosoming Hope! Oh the beautiful Lunch! The Lunch of the Friar Jonar!"
The dibbuns giggled and clung to Skipper's ankles, who tried and failed to shake them off. He pretended to panic.
"Oh no! Fearsome warriors are attacking! Help! Help"
The dibbuns giggled harder and one, a little mousebabe named Elyth, bared her pearly little teeth and growled. "Aye! I bes a migh'y warkior! None gorra afeat me inna bakkle!"
Friar slammed his ladle and squeaked over the din, "Ahem! Lunch is served!"
A long line of hungry novices and abbeybeasts hurried to the food. Llawder and Ailalue, among them, served up huge platters of tea bread, deeper'n'ever pie, and mugs of Dandelion Fizz.
Llawder scanned the wall for a place to eat. There was none, so the two friends went down to the pond and began eating under a willow tree.
Soon Abbot Haorl and Dajen the Recorder sat down with them. Haorl patted Ailalue's paw. "Young badger, would you let two old mice join you and your friend for lunch?"
Ailalue grinned. "Of course Father Abbot! Always nice to have company."
Dajen's face crinkled into a smile. The aincient mouse was mute but always observed and payed attention to what others said.
Abbot Haorl leaned towards Llawder and Ailalue and whispered, "Last night I was visited by Martin the Warrior. Do you know what he said?"
Llawder and Ailalue shook their heads, their eyes wide.
"Well you'll find out soon enough!"
*Ch. 2*
"Llawder! Llawder! Wake up!"
Ailalue shoved with all her weight against Llawder's soft stomach, avoiding the spikes. He rolled down the slope and splashed into the pond, waking instantly. He wrinkled his snout. "What'd you do that for?"
His badger friend placed her paws on her hips and called with a mocking smile, "You fell asleep. It's already time for supper. C'mon, the Abbot's going to tell us what Martin said!"
Llawder hurriedly scurried out of the pond, his green habit dripping wet. The two sprinted over the empty lawn to the Abbey, and slipped into the Great Hall. The Abbot had already started his announcement.
"...he told me this:
Over sea and over land,
the Natives soon shall take their stand
against a leader, with right to reign,
but only causes death and pain.
If alone no chance they've got-
the Seircraw must travel to southlands hot.
Repell against the nae mountains,
Add the way to rumbling fountains.
Stay in the land of mighty sorrow-
For they too need a good tomorrow."
The hall fell silent, except for the chewing of Ballscoff the hare. Suddenly a small voice piped up,
"Favver Abbot?" It was a dibbun mouse "I ken I gots the last part."
There was a buzz of whispers, but the Abbot raised his paw for silence.
"Go on, then, Marie. Tell us."
Marie nervously fidgeted with her tail. "You see, it's tellin' da Syr... da Syrcarw... da thingy which way tae go. Da nae mountains, dat's da norff, wiffa mountains. An' last season we studied da georaphy offa lan' west of Mossf'ower. Dere's a big wakerfall, which be da fou'ain. So da t'ingy gorra go souffwest."
There was another buzz of whispers. Haorl called above the noise, "Dajen, Marie, Mossvale, Ailalue, and Llawder. Marie, take two of your dibbun friends- we need fresh minds. Come down to Cavern Hole to work on this riddle."
*Ch. 3*
Marie dashed into Cavern Hole late, bringing her two mouse friends, Sapphire and the little mousemaid Elyth. The Abbot sighed a sigh of relief, knowing it was by pure luck Marie had brought the quick-thinking Sapphire instead of her hyper, mischeivous twin Aster. But of course there was still Elyth for that.
"Alright, let's start at the beginning, shall we?"
Dajen scanned the sheet he had written the riddle on. Sister Mossvale, teacher of the Abbey school, read over his shoulder.
"Over sea and over land,
The Natives soon shall take their stand
Against a leader, with right to reign,
But who only causes death and pain"
Ailalue rolled her eyes. "Well that's obvious, it's like in the story of Joseph the Bellmaker where they save Southsward from the evil foxwolf."
Haorl frowned. "But it's different- this says 'with right to reign.' So it's not a forced leadership. D'you think a woodlander could be doing evil?"
The room fell silent at the thought.
Llawder smiled nervously. "Heh heh, why don't we figure out the only part left- what the Seircraw is."
Abbot Haorl yawned. "No, young one, we shall, but let us sleep on it."
After much protesting, especially from the dibbuns, they all trooped off to bed, wondering the same thing.
Who was doing it?
