It all began with a chilled winter wind rushing through the camp... **A white, light brown, and tan ferret with ice-blue eyes stood beside a dimly glowing fire. The wind blew erriely as she uttered these first words. She continued solemnly** Friends, I tell you a true tale, not a partial tale, not a fictional tale, but a TRUE story of my young life. At least, what I know of it.
...Indeed the wind blew, and bitterly so, through a small camp of vermin stoats and ferrets. They were camped in a desolated valley. Beside the vermin, the dreary place was deserted. It was cold, and menacing. The battered vermin were hudled around the pitifully small fires nestled in a patch of clear ground. They had to sheild the fires as much as possible from the occasionally fall of snow that came with the wind. To ferrets hudled alone to the right of the only tent in the camp. (The tent was their leaders, but even it was cramped and worn out.) Calina, the female of the two, lay on the ground in pain and was groaning weakly. Her health had been failing over the past two weeks. She was pregnant, and her burden made it hard for her to keep up with the rest of the battered vermin, especially with the winter weather. The other ferret knelt beside her was a male, and the father. His name was Karnroth. He was a proud ferret and protective of his mate. He had stayed with her throughout the journey and given her his attention and help. Now they both thought that their troubles would end with the birth of the baby. But they were terribly wrong. The baby was born and called Kaley. She was beautiful, and most of the vermin were glad to have her. But as she grew to be a few seasons, and started to develope certain personalities, the horde and especially the parents knew that she was not what they had expected. Calina and Karnoth, from what I heard, were two of the most respected vermin in the group. All had expected their daughter to follow in their pawsteps. But time revealed that, Kaley was nothing of a vermin. She was indeed a great warrior like her father and bore a head of wisdom as her mother did; but her heart was not that of a barbaric vermin. Something inside her always resisted that part of her training. She found ways around the things she didn't think were right. Calina and Karnroth grew more and more worried as the clan grew more and more agitated. They started complaining and gossiping. Soon it was widely known that the clan disaprooved of Kaley's unavoidable benevolence and gentleness when it came to killing. She was too just in their eyes and they believed correctly that she didn't fit in with the group, nor would she ever. Naturally, Calina and Karnroth were very upset at the clan's reaction and afraid their daughter was in trouble. They were vermin, but they still loved their child. So, when things got especially ugly one day, the sent their daughter, Kaley, away. The vermin were out to take hold of Kaley and kill her. Kaley didn't get an explaination; she was forced to leave her parents and the only life she knew to quest out beyond the mountains and head for the southern lands all by faith of her parents. Kaley was barely out of her dibbunhood when she left. She was, as I metioned, wise and an able warrior. She left that land and never returned. Kaley ran for her life to the Southern lands and explored many a new land, both to her and to her old clan. She noted with saddness that the gentlebeasts she met all lept back at the sight of her, a ferret; or simply yelled at her to get back. No matter how much she tried too explain, very few ever believed her. She lived a hard life, 'aveing to make her own way with little help. But she survived the seasons and learned much about life, war, and beasts' in general. Kaley had decided after a couple seasons that she would figure out as much as possible what happened at her camp and what happened to her parents after she left. She inquired many beasts, vermin and common. She discovered with greif that her mother and father were slain while defending her from the vermin. This is how I learned of the story of my past. Kaley, after learning all she could about her past, renamed herself Noel and decided to leave the past behind now; vowing to never become the type of creature called vermin that her old clan were. After a stay with a mythical magician, she earned the tile Arabi-athem, Daughter of the Dragons. Noel, myself, then quested about the lands as a wanderer, looking desperatly for a place to make a home, or at least some friends.
And that is how I came to here. You all now know, at least to a small extent, why I was so relieved at your acceptance. I had searched far and wide, but you are the first to have shown me such kindness.
So I thank you all, for your kindness and for listening to my tale. I am indebted to you all for your deeds and pray that such unfortune as mine will never befall such kind-hearted beasts.
**Noel bit her lip, which had been quivering lightly from emotion, and blinked back tears. She bowed slightly to indicate that she was finished and left the spotlight to seat herself on a log next to the fire where she waited patiently for another to tell his/her story.**
